Tony Lloyd, former Interim-Mayor for Greater Manchester has hit out over US President Donald Trump’s exit from the Paris Climate Change Deal.

The former Mayor, who was part of the signing of the historic agreement of nations and cities in Paris, said Trump’s exit was “arrogance and greed.”

The Paris agreement commits the US and 187 other countries to keeping rising global temperatures below 2C, above pre-industrial levels and limit them even more, to 1.5C. Only Nicaragua and Syria did not sign up.

Mr Lloyd said: “I am disappointed that the nation that could make such a difference will not hold up their end of the deal out of utter arrogance and greed. We must all step up to tackle climate change, as we agreed as part of the Paris Climate Deal. This is shameful abandonment by Trump.”

In June last year, Mr Lloyd led the way for Greater Manchester when he signed the historic merger between the Compact and the European Union’s Covenant of Mayors, creating the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy, a first-of-its-kind global initiative of cities and local governments leading in the fight against climate change.

Greater Manchester’s target for the year 2020 is to cut emissions by 48 per cent to their levels back in 1990.
