Speaking in response to ‘rape exemption clause’ for tax credits, Greater Manchester Mayor and Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Lloyd said:

“Many people will be left scratching their heads as to why the government is bringing in a two-child limit in the first place, but this treatment of women who have been victims of violence is abhorrent.

“That the government is sneaking in clauses around its tax credits system that would require victims of rape to prove their child is a result of sex attack is callousness of the highest order.

“Not only is it completely insensitive, it’s wholly unworkable and has not been thought out at all. It’s no wonder that both the DWP and department of health are trying to distance themselves from it.

“They should scrap this immediately.”
